German Author Fontane’s 200th Birthday Celebrated

Wednesday 26 June 2019

Wandern und Plaudern mit FontaneToday sees the publication of Wandern und Plaudern mit Fontane. Literarische Begegnungen mit der Mark-Brandenburg heute [Walking and Conversing with Fontane. Literary Encounters with the Brandenburg Region Today], a volume of specially commissioned texts by contemporary authors creatively engaging with Fontane’s Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg (1862).

The book was conceived and edited by Gisela Holfter (University of Limerick) and the IMLR’s Godela Weiss-Sussex, who asked 13 writers to follow in the footsteps of one of the best loved German authors, identifying their own special area, angle and inspiration. What results are very individual takes which engage in dialogue with Fontane's writing, uncover the beauty and the tales of the Brandenburg region and reveal the area's true character. Publication coincides with and celebrates the 200th anniversary of Fontane’s birth. The book is already attracting much attention in Germany, with a feature on yesterday’s 'Kultur Aktuell' programme on Radio Berlin Brandenburg, and a discussion with the editors and readings by Kathrin Schmidt, Florian Werner and Annett Gröschner on 25 October in the Haus der Brandenburgisch-Preußischen Geschichte, Potsdam. Tickets for this event (Eur 5,00 [standard] and Eur 3,00 [concessions]) are now on sale.
