Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Translingual Communities, European Languages and Digital Humanities Wanted

The Institute of Modern Languages Research is seeking a highly qualified, independent and talented Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Translingual Communities, European Languages and Digital Humanities to join a University of London, School of Advanced Study-based research team, led by Professor Catherine Davies and Professor Jane Winters, contributing to the AHRC Open World Research Initiative (OWRI) programme ‘Cross-Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community’ (CLDRC).

IMLR Launches Regional Conference Grant

The Institute is delighted to announce its new Regional Conference Grant Scheme. The scheme aims to support the study of modern languages outside London, to promote inter-institutional collaborations, and bring together scholars from the wider region as participants or attendees. Two awards are expected to be made each year, with a maximum of £2,000 being awarded per application. Applications for events planned for the period 1 September 2017 to 30 June 2018 are now invited. Adalgisa Giorgio becomes IMLR Associate Fellow

Dr Adalgisa Giorgio (Bath) has been appointed an Associate Fellow at the IMLR. The Fellowship runs for five years in the first instance. Adlagisa Giorgio is an acknowledged specialist in Italian women's writing and a long-standing member of the Steering Committee of the Centre for the Study of Women's Writing (CCWW) at the Institute, contributing to its online resources, publications, events and Fellowships programme. Ernst Bloch Centre Transfers to the IMLR

Founded in 2007 at the University of Sheffield, the Centre for Ernst Bloch Studies has transferred to the IMLR, where it will be known as the Ernst Bloch Centre for German Thought.

Fragile Memory

Fragile Memory, Shifting Impunity is an interdisciplinary study of commemorative sites related to human rights violations committed primarily during dictatorial rule in Argentina (1976-1983) and Uruguay (1973-1985). Taking as a departure point the ‘politics of memory’ – a term that acknowledges memory’s propensity for engagement beyond the cultural sphere – this study by Cara Levey shifts the focus away from exclusively aesthetic and architectural readings of marches, memorials and monuments to instead analyse their emergence and transformation in post-dictatorship Argentina and Uruguay.

'Motherhood, Religions and Spirituality' Published

Motherhood, Religions and Spirituality , edited by Sariya Cheruvallil-Contractor and Gill Rye, is now available as a special issue of Religion and Gender (6.1, 2016). The concept for this interdisciplinary and cross-cultural publication – and some of the articles themselves – started life at the AHRC-funded 'Motherhood in post-1968 European Literature' Network Workshop on 'Motherhood, Religions and Spirituality', held at the University of London on 28 June 2013.
